On a visit to Shanghai’s live insect market, Allsopp was at once repulsed and yet intrigued. Suspended from every height were cages that covered entire shop fronts contained within them were spiders and various insects - all seemingly thinking of escape. It is this conflict of emotions that Allsopp is drawn to and conveys in her work. The luxury of gold and platinum lustre hand painted onto finely modelled porcelain is in contrast to the unsettling and disturbing figures of various arthropods.
Her unique works often recall Victorian fascination with collecting, classification, enclosure and the memento mori. Allsop is an MA (RCA) ceramics and glass graduate where she know holds a senior tutor role.
