‘Cameo Series’ was inspired by investigating the ornament & traditions of English 19th century cameo glass. The imagery follows the familiar motif of the bird as it escapes from its 19th century scenery and explores new surroundings. The decorative floral motifs, inspired by original cameo designs, have been infiltrated by a modern aesthetic.

Cameo Vase XI, 22cm high £520

Scott Benefield is internationally known as a glassblower and educator with a speciality in Italian cane techniques. He has conducted workshops on these techniques in the UK, ROI, Turkey, Japan and throughout the United States where he resided for many years. Now you can admire his work at Vessel Gallery.

Benefield takes the exquisite techniques of mid century Italian glass as a starting point to his work. His Vetro Mosaico Vessel moves beyond historical replica by intentionally disrupting the rhythm and order of pattern to create a unique, tension filled piece that question our ideas about perfection and control. The collection uses sheet glass that has been fused into murrine and blown out using only a glory hole (without a furnace).

Bengt Hokanson and Trefny Dix are partners in life and work. They met in New Orleans in 1994 and have now set up their studio in Durango, Colorado. Their sources of inspiration greatly vary from the paintings of Howard Hodkins and Mark Rothko to African textiles and the immediacy of graffiti.

Vessel Gallery is proud to present their creations new to the UK and Europe. The work fuses Swedish and Italian techniques to create exciting, bold pieces each containing abstract forms, their palette range is wonderfully vibrant and exquisitely composed.

Sail vases £695 each, H55cm W30cm

‘The unique murrini pattern on each side of this piece is visible through opposing sides of the work.  An opaque color wrap encircles the abstract pattern. These pieces remind us of  sailboat spinnakers blowing in the wind.’

Purse vases £395 each, H14cm W30cm

‘In these pieces, two overlapping colors are complimented by a simple murrini pick up. This group was inspired by a collection of ladies handbags from the 1920’s and ‘30’s. They are elegant, romantic and fun.’

‘I’ve always wanted to design glasses with a little tray under them,’ he says. ‘Every teacup comes with a saucer, but beer glasses are put on paper coasters. I don’t know why glasses have never had this matching tray. It’s such a basic, stupid idea, I don’t know why no one thought of it before.’ KL

Swedish artist Ann Wåhlström has made glass for companies from Ikea through to Kosta Boda and is well known for her sense of colour and simplicity of design. We are pleased to showcase a collection of  unique art works for the first time and exclusively in the UK.

Her inspiration comes from nature, ancient architecture and children’s book illustration (she cites Moomin creator Tove Jansson as a huge influence). For the past few years Wåhlström has been producing glass works handblown in Seattle and Tacoma where she collaborates with hugely talented blowers that can offer her a different perspective from her Swedish roots.
