Adding to Amanda Brisbane’s spectacular and perfectly named collection Frozen Water are these erupting glass sculptures. For such size and drama these pieces are exceptionally elegant and exclusive to Vessel, are placed on a base of stainless steel. Like the setting to a precious stone, these bases add a wonderful contrast and reflection to the soft glow of the crystal above.

A breathtaking array of glass creations can viewed at the The Address Hotel, Downtown Burj Dubai as part of a large installation by Amanda including 64 individual pieces and a site specific sculpture that is a whopping 4.5m in height called Megareus. An absolute must see should you be visiting the UAE. If not, our very own Morning Glory are every inch as spectacular!

Approximately 56cm in height, from £1750 to £1950

Bengt Hokanson and Trefny Dix are partners in life and work. They met in New Orleans in 1994 and have now set up their studio in Durango, Colorado. Their sources of inspiration greatly vary from the paintings of Howard Hodkins and Mark Rothko to African textiles and the immediacy of graffiti.

Vessel Gallery is proud to present their creations new to the UK and Europe. The work fuses Swedish and Italian techniques to create exciting, bold pieces each containing abstract forms, their palette range is wonderfully vibrant and exquisitely composed.

Sail vases £695 each, H55cm W30cm

‘The unique murrini pattern on each side of this piece is visible through opposing sides of the work.  An opaque color wrap encircles the abstract pattern. These pieces remind us of  sailboat spinnakers blowing in the wind.’

Purse vases £395 each, H14cm W30cm

‘In these pieces, two overlapping colors are complimented by a simple murrini pick up. This group was inspired by a collection of ladies handbags from the 1920’s and ‘30’s. They are elegant, romantic and fun.’

We’re currently showcasing new pieces by Cathryn Shilling, who having studied in Connecticut returned to the UK and has a studio based here in London. Her Standing Forms appear to be mimicking the construction of fabric. Her use of different coloured glass rods enhance the woven like appearance of each piece, which is then slumped, allowing it to stand giving each piece a strong presence in contrast of the implied flexibility inherent to cloth.

Standing Form £900 each, H 42 – 45cm

Lanterne Marine at No 10

We are thrilled to be assisting Janice Blackburn OBE with her continued exhibition series at No 10 Downing Street. Her latest selection includes the striking Lanterne Marine Venini vases by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, winning designers of this years Olympic Torch. We’re supporting the project by loaning two vases from our gallery to be viewed by the many distinguished visitors over the next few months. Our very own Juliet Mayo was on hand to aid with the installation and we couldn’t resist sharing her moment of crossing the threshold.

Lanterne Marine, Venini limited edition of 9 pieces per design. 47cm to 60cm in height

More on the ongoing project;

Number 10 Downing Street is for the first time hosting an exhibition of some of the UK’s finest contemporary craft. Visitors to the Prime Minister’s official residence will be able to see a diverse range of works by established and up-and-coming contemporary craftspeople showcasing the UK’s vibrant craft sector, which contributes £3bn a year to the UK economy and employs more than 80,000 people.

“Contemporary craft doesn’t necessarily have the same profile as contemporary art, but it is no less important in terms of creativity or its ability to enrich people’s lives,” said Ed Vaizey, Culture Minister.

The display curated by Janice Blackburn OBE – a well-known patron of the arts, freelance curator, writer and former co-curator of the Saatchi Gallery – will show a large variety of pieces in the state rooms and communal areas of the building. It is expected that the Downing Street display will be ongoing and will be changed every few months.

‘I’ve always wanted to design glasses with a little tray under them,’ he says. ‘Every teacup comes with a saucer, but beer glasses are put on paper coasters. I don’t know why glasses have never had this matching tray. It’s such a basic, stupid idea, I don’t know why no one thought of it before.’ KL

Swedish artist Ann Wåhlström has made glass for companies from Ikea through to Kosta Boda and is well known for her sense of colour and simplicity of design. We are pleased to showcase a collection of  unique art works for the first time and exclusively in the UK.

Her inspiration comes from nature, ancient architecture and children’s book illustration (she cites Moomin creator Tove Jansson as a huge influence). For the past few years Wåhlström has been producing glass works handblown in Seattle and Tacoma where she collaborates with hugely talented blowers that can offer her a different perspective from her Swedish roots.
