Scott Benefield is internationally known as a glassblower and educator with a speciality in Italian cane techniques. He has conducted workshops on these techniques in the UK, ROI, Turkey, Japan and throughout the United States where he resided for many years. Now you can admire his work at Vessel Gallery.

Benefield takes the exquisite techniques of mid century Italian glass as a starting point to his work. His Vetro Mosaico Vessel moves beyond historical replica by intentionally disrupting the rhythm and order of pattern to create a unique, tension filled piece that question our ideas about perfection and control. The collection uses sheet glass that has been fused into murrine and blown out using only a glory hole (without a furnace).

Vessel Gallery is proud to present New Works by Hanne Enemark who is a British designer and glass maker of Danish descent with and understanding of the hot and cold qualities of glass. She draws heavily from her Scandinavian upbringing, the softness of her blown bubbles are in stark contrast to the addition of the hard gem like elements clustered at the foot or the rim of her pieces. The works are labour intensive and all pieces are hand blown and polished using age old techniques. The resultant forms celebrate the many conflicting qualities of glass, from airy fluidity to sharp rocky shards. On show will be her newest and largest pieces ever made, her award winning Cristallized collection and her Phototaxis chandelier.

New Works by Hanne Enemark runs from 10th July to 19th August

‘I’ve always wanted to design glasses with a little tray under them,’ he says. ‘Every teacup comes with a saucer, but beer glasses are put on paper coasters. I don’t know why glasses have never had this matching tray. It’s such a basic, stupid idea, I don’t know why no one thought of it before.’ KL

Swedish artist Ann Wåhlström has made glass for companies from Ikea through to Kosta Boda and is well known for her sense of colour and simplicity of design. We are pleased to showcase a collection of  unique art works for the first time and exclusively in the UK.

Her inspiration comes from nature, ancient architecture and children’s book illustration (she cites Moomin creator Tove Jansson as a huge influence). For the past few years Wåhlström has been producing glass works handblown in Seattle and Tacoma where she collaborates with hugely talented blowers that can offer her a different perspective from her Swedish roots.

Lynn Read Glass

Lynn Read is a new artist to Vessel and we have just this week received delivery of his colourful graphic pieces. Read graduated from Maryland College of Art with a degree in sculpture but a love of glass prompted him to apply his artistry to this material. Working with renowned artists such as Ben Moore and Boyd Sugiki at Pilchuck, Read has honed his craft and produces his stunning collections from a studio in Portland, Oregon.

His inspiration stems from sources as diverse as medieval tapestry to Bauhaus and he manages to combine complexity of pattern with clarity of form. One of the most important issues is that the pieces are all made by hand using age old techniques of glass blowing that have remained unchanged for centuries. The directness of his approach is a welcome juxtaposition to the graphic nature of his forms.
