SIMON MOORE

b - Hull 1959

Simon Moore’s first encounters with glass were at the hands of a third generation Whitefriars glass maker. Decades of knowledge, skills handed down from father to son, were an inspiration to the young Moore and he seized the opportunity to learn the disciplines of an age old craft. The importance of preserving these gems of knowledge in a climate of globalisation and mass manufacture is of central importance to Moore’s practice. Moore has a distinguished and varied career as a maker, designer, creative director and Royal College of Art lecturer, and is uniquely placed within both the ceramics and glass world. He was one of the only outsiders ever to take on the creative direction of a prestigious Venetian glass company. When he held the reins of Salviati, he oversaw some of the most important collaborations of the company’s history.

Moore’s pieces demonstrate not only his unparalleled mastery of the glass medium, but his keen eye for colour and drama. His platters, bowls and vases beg to be touched and used, yet work equally well as elegant still lives.

In his own words;
‘For me, to have an idea that my own skills could not achieve has always been unacceptable. To have an idea that stretched and extended my skills was all the better, but if the piece was just about showing off those skills then the result would be soulless.’

Simon Moore would like to acknowledge the expertise of Paula Makey in the cold working of these pieces.
