Vessel, the authority on contemporary glass, is proud to showcase the work of Britain’s foremost glass maestro, Simon Moore. For the past 25 years Moore has been designing and making glass pieces of renowned quality behind the scene as
Art Director for both Salviati in Murano, Italy, and Dartington at home. It is due time, therefore, for Vessel to shine a light on the solo creations of this talented artist.
Unique daring vases and platters will be presented, demonstrating not only Moore’s unparallelled mastery of the glass medium, but his keen eye for colour and drama.
As he says, ‘For me, to have an idea that my own skills could not achieve has always been unacceptable. To have an idea that stretched and extended my skills was all
the better, but if the piece was just about showing off those skills then the result
would be soulless.’The inherent quality of a material and the influence of tradition are key starting points in Moore’s own work, but both are translated with a 21st century design mind. His glass is the very essence of fluidity and craftsmanship. He retains a sense
of the molten liquid through the playfulness of a maker who is assured in his ability.
Moore has a distinguished and varied career as a maker, designer, creative director
and Royal College of Art lecturer, and is uniquely placed within both the ceramics
and glass world. He was one of the only outsiders ever to take on the creative direction
of a prestigious Venetian glass company. When he held the reins of Salviati,
he oversaw some of the most important collaborations of the company’s history, created in the project ‘Salviati Meets London’ curated by Vessel Gallery.
This project enabled him to work with artists such as Anish Kapoor, Tom Dixon
and Thomas Heatherwick.
Moore’s first encounters with glass were at the hands of third generation Whitefriars
glass maker. Decades of knowledge, skills handed down from father to son, were an inspiration to the young Moore and he seized the opportunity to learn the disciplines
of an age old craft. The importance of preserving these gems of knowledge in a climate of globalisation and mass manufacture is of central importance to Moore’s practice.
His platters, bowls and vases beg to be touched and used, yet work equally well as elegant still lives: ‘My overriding concern throughout the making process is that the final object should be both practical in its use and sensual in its tactile pleasures.’
Simon Moore’s stunning new artglass collection will be exclusively on show at Vessel from September. Join us in celebrating the refined skill of this multitalented maker. |
