about

A unique cast glass sculpture by Heike Brachlow.

Born and raised in Munich, Germany, Brachlow discovered glass while living in New Zealand, where she worked as a glassblower in a small studio in Rotorua. She received her BA in 2004 from the University of Wolverhampton and her MA and PhD from the Royal College of Art in London in 2006 and 2012. She primarily works as a self-employed artist from her studio at Parndon Mill, and as tutor in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art, as well as regularly teaching summer school courses at the Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass and other institutions.

Brachlow draws her inspiration from her travels, human interaction, architecture and geometry. Due to a love of colour and a frustration with the limited palette available in glass, she makes her own coloured glass. A liking for the unexpected results in sculpture that works on different levels and somehow transcends objecthood: the work physically engages the viewer. Monumental solid cylinders move effortlessly when touched, delineating time and space. Forms stacked on top of each other might fall at any moment to create chaos, geometric shapes precariously balance on a single point of contact.

The artist has works in many permanent collections including; The V&A, UK | Glasmuseum Hentrich, Europäisches Museum für Modernes Glas & Glasmuseum Alter Hof Herding, all in Germany | Museum of Glass, USA | Imagine Museum, USA.

Brachlow has also exhibited extensively through the UK, Europe and the USA.
