about

'Kepler-22b' is a unique glass artwork from the Quiescent Collection by the British artist, Peter Bowles.

As explained by the artist:

"Quiescent Objects are a new series of works that consider stillness as a physical and perceptual condition rather than a symbolic one. The work engages moments in which gravity, energy, and time are brought into equilibrium. Form is treated not as expression or narrative, but as a resolved state in which motion has ceased and energy remains held. The objects invite sustained attention, allowing stillness to register through gradual shifts in light, depth, and transitions in transparency, translucency and opacity.

Each work is titled after a discovered exoplanet, astronomical bodies known not through direct image but through their influence on surrounding light and matter. This naming structure aligns the behaviour of glass with larger physical systems, linking micro scale material chemistry to macro scale galactic equilibrium. Quiescent Objects position glass as a medium capable of holding both material precision and expansive scale, where presence is sensed gradually and form exists in a state of quiet resolution.

The works are realised in personally formulated neodymium and cobalt tinted striking phosphate opal glass. Through careful control of chemical composition and temperature control whilst making, translucency and opacity are calibrated to hold and diffuse light rather than reflect it. Depth is generated materially, emerging from internal structure rather than surface articulation. Each form is blown, outside cased, then cut, ground, and hand pumice finished."

The artist can also create pieces to commission, please contact the gallery for further information.
