about

'Old Money - Closer No 97' is a unique glass sculpture from the Closer Series by the Swedish artist, Markus Emilsson, created from handblown glass with internal mirroring within some of the sections.

Emilsson views each of his Closer works as an organic winding cluster of bodies, where solitary units bend, twist and adapt around each other in an acrobatic act, seeking a new togetherness. Is each a rendezvous? A gathering? A collision? Perhaps this is for the viewer to determine but each are created to remind us that we need each other to perform the 'choreography of life'.

It is during this dance with others that we can inspire, imitate, influence, even reflect on one another. Where we need to give and take, as well as, lead and follow. It takes practice, curiosity and courage to perform such interactions, which are best fulfilled using generosity, intimacy and sensibility.

In the artist's own words:

"In a society where polarization and dichotomy’s approaches have become much more accepted, I feel the need to remind myself to practice on a closer choreography of togetherness."

Emilsson's public appearances take place both inside and outside the traditional art scene and have resulted in numerous solo & group exhibitions in Sweden, with many works commissioned for collaborative art projects or acquired for public collections. Aiding his creative development he has received several grants, including a two-year working grant in 2024 from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee.

The artist can also create pieces to commission, please contact the gallery for further information.
