Paradise by Amy Cushing | Solo Exhibition
29th January - 11th March 2024
Created as the artist’s antidote to all things grey and uninspiring, Paradise are a celebration of the exotic and tropical. Taking Jamaica, jungle flora, birds of paradise, sunlight on crystal clear water, as sources of inspiration, Cushing aims to transport the viewer to sunnier climes with her use of saturated colour.
Each unique glass sculpture is created using hybrid hand-made glass techniques and combines mouth blown & kiln formed glass, each piece within the collection displays a multiple of highly skilled glass processes, culminating in depth and vibrancy in each artwork.
Conceived in 2020 and with continual development since, each palette is critical to Cushing, with many requiring diverse firing tests to reach the perfect desired balance and contrast. The forms and construction are also immensely challenging, in the artist’s own words;
“I needed light to pass through and intensify the colours, with overlapping finials creating different compositions depending on each sculpture’s rotation”
Completely unique every time one is made, Paradise fulfils Cushing’s quest as an artist for an infinite combination of colour and abstract pattern formation. The hope being, that as each new artwork comes to fruition, it will retain synergy with its former counterparts, whilst communicating something slightly different as the palettes evolve.
