The Value in Things at Cromwell Place | Group Exhibition
1st - 11th March 2023
Cromwell Place, Gallery 12, The Study and Wing Gallery, 4 Cromwell Place, London, SW7 2JE
A dynamic and forward-looking exhibition of contemporary collectible objects presented by two of the leading galleries in the Contemporary Craft Field. Occupying 3 galleries within Cromwell Place, each space will show new work from principal practitioners in ceramics and glass; incorporating solo representations Amphore Métaphore by Baldwin & Guggisberg (Vessel Gallery) and Alice Walton (Ting Ying Gallery) as well as an exciting group showcase by curator Brian Kennedy.
To accompany the exhibition a series of commissioned essays by Dr Emma Park, Emma Crichton-Miller, and Malaika Byng, will look at the journey these objects take from the studio, through the gallery and into collections, both institutional and private. What sets these things apart from the ordinary? What makes owning them relevant? Why is it important to own them? What is their value within the broader cultural landscape? Why should they be collected?
An opportunity to see world-class museum-quality artworks, to understand their stories, appreciate their power and debate their value. In these times where we are all rightly questioning meaningless consumption, this exhibition debates the issues of ownership and the importance of collecting, the joy that these objects can bring in the now while caring and preserving them for the future.
